What Makes a Good Solo Travel Destination?

9/5/2026

Not every destination will suit every solo traveller. When I'm deciding where to travel alone, I'd consider several things. After travelling to more than 100 countries, both solo and with my dog Gimli, I've learned that the best solo travel destinations aren't always the most popular ones.

A great solo destination is somewhere that makes you feel excited, comfortable, and confident enough to explore at your own pace. Whether you're planning your first solo adventure or looking for inspiration for your next trip, these destinations offer the right mix of safety, accessibility, culture, and opportunities to connect with other travellers.

  • Safety
Safety is understandably one of the biggest considerations, particularly for first-time and solo female travellers. I recommend researching your destination before you go and checking current government travel advice.
  • Ease of getting around
A destination with reliable public transport, straightforward connections and easy-to-navigate cities can make solo travel much less stressful.
  • Budget
Travelling alone can sometimes be more expensive because you don't have someone to split accommodation or transport costs with. Choosing somewhere affordable can make it easier to stay longer and enjoy more experiences.
  • Language and culture
Consider how comfortable you are travelling somewhere where you don't speak the language. Learning a few basic local phrases can go a long way and is also a great way to connect with people.
  • Solo-friendly accommodation
Hostels and guesthouses can be particularly useful for solo travellers because they're social places where it's easy to meet other people. Many also organise tours, activities and social events.
  • Local customs
Before visiting somewhere with very different cultural customs, I always recommend doing some research. Understanding things like dress codes, etiquette and local behaviour can help you avoid awkward situations and show respect to the people who live there.

Solo travel isn't about being alone—it's about discovering just how capable you are. The right destination can help you build confidence, meet incredible people, and create memories that are entirely your own.

Whether you're dreaming of backpacking through Southeast Asia, exploring New Zealand's landscapes, or wandering the streets of Japan, the best solo travel destination is ultimately the one that inspires you to take that first step. Your next adventure is waiting—you don't need a travel companion to start it.
