When most people think of Tanzania, they immediately picture two things: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and going on an African safari. Originally, my plan was to climb Kilimanjaro, but after researching the costs, I quickly realised it was outside my budget. Multi-day Kilimanjaro treks can easily cost over $1,000, making them inaccessible for many backpackers and budget travellers.

Rather than leaving Tanzania disappointed, I decided to focus on something that had always been on my bucket list – an authentic African safari.
Together with fellow travellers Melissa and Dario, I spent a day exploring the streets of Moshi in search of an affordable safari tour that wouldn't break the bank.

Finding a reliable safari company for safari tours in Tanzania can be overwhelming. Prices vary dramatically, and unfortunately scams do exist. We visited numerous tour operators, collecting quotes and comparing itineraries.
Some companies offered deals that seemed too good to be true, while others were far beyond our budget. Eventually, we found a company that struck the perfect balance between affordability, professionalism and trustworthiness.

The team were friendly, informative and never pushy. They answered all our questions, provided a detailed itinerary and made us feel comfortable throughout the booking process.

After much deliberation, we booked a budget friendly 4-day/3 night Tanzania Safari with MJ Safaris and Adventure, covering three of the country's most famous wildlife destinations:

Exploring Tarangire National Park

Our safari began bright and early with a 6:30am pickup from our hotel. After stopping in Arusha to collect additional travellers and enjoy breakfast, we continued towards Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is famous for its large elephant population and iconic baobab trees. Within hours of entering the park, we found ourselves surrounded by wildlife.

One of the highlights was watching herds of elephants gather along the riverbanks. Seeing these incredible animals roaming freely in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience.

At lunchtime, we enjoyed a picnic overlooking the African landscape before continuing our game drive. Several elephants wandered remarkably close to our vehicle, creating thrilling moments for everyone onboard.
That evening, we arrived at our safari lodge where tents were already prepared. After a delicious dinner and a swim, we settled in for the night, eager for what lay ahead.

First Impressions of the Serengeti
The second day began with a scenic drive through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area on our way to the world-famous Serengeti National Park.
The changing landscapes were breathtaking. Rolling hills, open grasslands and roaming wildlife created scenes that looked straight out of a nature documentary.

After entering the Serengeti, we stopped at a viewpoint overlooking the seemingly endless plains. It was one of those travel moments that instantly stays with you forever.

During our afternoon game drive we encountered:

• Lions and lion cubs
• Cheetahs
• Elephants
• Zebras
• Wildebeest
• Gazelles
• Ostriches
• Giraffes
• Warthogs
• Numerous bird species

Standing through the open roof of our safari vehicle, camera in hand, I felt completely immersed in the African wilderness.
That evening we stayed at a campsite inside the Serengeti. Listening to the sounds of nature after dark while knowing wild animals roamed nearby added an extra layer of excitement to the experience.

An Incredible Serengeti Game Drive
Our second day in the Serengeti started before sunrise. The early morning hours are often the best time for wildlife viewing, and today certainly proved that theory correct.

Within a few hours we had witnessed:

• A pride of lions stalking wildebeest
• Leopards resting among rocky outcrops
• Hippos relaxing in water pools
• Hyenas patrolling the plains
• Buffalo herds grazing
• More giraffes, zebras and elephants

At this point we had spotted four of Africa's famous Big Five animals:

1. Lion
2. Leopard
3. Elephant
4. Buffalo

Only the rhino remained.

Why the Serengeti Is Worth the Extra Cost

Many budget travellers question whether visiting the Serengeti is worth the additional expense compared to shorter safaris. For me, the answer is simple: absolutely. Even though I was travelling on a budget, the experience dramatically outweighed the extra cost - memories are priceless after all!

The sheer scale of the landscape, the diversity of wildlife and the feeling of being in the heart of Africa make the Serengeti one of the most remarkable places I have ever visited.

Camping on the Edge of Ngorongoro Crater
​After leaving the Serengeti, we travelled back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and stayed overnight at Simba Campsite.
Perched near the crater rim, the campsite offered spectacular views across the surrounding landscape.

As the sun began to set, I took my yoga mat to a quiet grassy area overlooking the hills. It became one of my favourite moments of the entire trip — a peaceful reminder of how fortunate I was to experience such a special part of the world.

Is a Tanzania Safari Worth It?
Without question, yes.

Every day brought different landscapes, new wildlife encounters and unforgettable memories. From elephant herds in Tarangire to lions and leopards in the Serengeti, Tanzania exceeded every expectation I had.
What surprised me most was that it was possible to experience all of this without spending a fortune.
If you're travelling through East Africa and searching for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, a Tanzania safari deserves a place at the very top of your bucket list.
